“Portraits of the Mask” exhibition5/11/2021 What impact has the use of the face mask had on the pandemic? How many smiles and kisses were lost? How many words were silenced? And how many stories have been left untold? The face mask is a symbol of the isolation we experienced during the pandemic. "Portraits of the Mask" is its artistic expression. "Portraits of the Mask" is a project developed as a part of Faro's Candidature to the European Capital of Culture 2027, with the participation of photographer Vasco Célio, the 13-year-old multidisciplinary young artist, Matilde Valério, as well as the collaboration of students from the Performing Arts and Contemporary Dance course of Tomás Cabreira Secondary School and the senior and international theatre group Aperitivo. Until November 12th, visitors to Forum Algarve have the opportunity to enjoy the documental look by Vasco Célio, the poetic texts by Matilde Valério and listen to the different readings (in Portuguese and English) by the actors who, in a joint intergenerational artistic work, reveal the stories of ordinary people from faces. Date: until 12th of November

Today, November 5th, is World Cinema Day. We mark the date by showing the talented work of one of our “Capsules” - Reym Nasr - whose dream is to do characterization for cinema, more specifically "Make-up and Prosthetics for Performance". "At the beginning I was afraid to say that I wanted to be an artist and felt a connection to this area. I was afraid of what people would say and I was afraid that I wouldn't be good enough to publish on social networks and invest in this path. Fortunately, when you do what you really like, everything goes well. I have invested a lot in this dream. I've spent hours watching videos on Youtube and practising as much as possible to get my ideas on faces that I like to call my "canvas", says Reym. Unfortunately it is not possible for Reym to fulfil her dream in the Algarve and to pursue this career she will have to go abroad to study. Next year she will pack her bags to enter the London College of Fashion in London, UK. Reym is part of the Cápsula Project which aims to give voice to young talents from Faro and the Algarve (under-18), but above all to show that there is a new generation of artists who need to go abroad to become professional and build their dream career. The Cápsula project and young people like Reym show the potential that exists in our region and how the title of European Capital of Culture can change and shape its future: "It was also very important to join the Cápsula project, carried out by the Candidature of Faro to European Capital of Culture 2027. This project introduced me to other young artists in the areas of photography, literature and dance who are fighting like me to have a future connected to the arts. Faro and the Algarve really need to win the title of European Capital of Culture so that young people like me have more opportunities for the future in our region. Have you ever thought of an Algarve where Hollywood films with superheroes are made? It would be fantastic!" Radar XS, a news programme for children between ages of 8 and 12, which aims to encourage critical thinking and citizenship, came to meet Reym and show how talent has no age and dreams need to be nurtured!
We challenged the community and the cultural agents of the region to join us in building the Candidature of Faro to be the European Capital of Culture in 2027. During September there was an open call to the cultural and creative sector in the Algarve region to submit proposals and contributions to the cultural and artistic programme of the application. A total of 73 proposals were received, from agents throughout the region representing different artistic disciplines, with a significant number of multidisciplinary projects. Many of the projects show a great desire to work with and for the community, as well as to disseminate the Algarve's cultural heritage (tangible and intangible) and to take culture to unusual places. Bruno Inácio, Team Coordinator of Faro's candidacy to become the European Capital of Culture 2027, highlights the quality of the proposals presented, as well as the mobilising capacity of the entities that joined this initiative: "We are very pleased with the participation of the cultural and creative sector in the call we made to help us generate ideas for Faro's candidature process to become the European Capital of Culture. We received very interesting proposals that show the will and capacity of a sector that permanently seeks to reinvent itself, broadening its vision and capacity for action. We received proposals from all over the Algarve, which is also very important because the candidacy assumes this facet. We will now analyse the proposals and seek that within the process of artistic construction they are relevant". This phase of collecting ideas for the artistic content of the Candidature of Faro to European Capital of Culture 2027 also included an appeal to the entire population through the project Banca da Cultura. In online or face-to-face format, this project counted more than 800 participations, not only from individuals but also from entities and organizations that want to join the process. During 3 months, digital sessions were held, visits to associations and regional organizations were made and the existence of a space dedicated to the candidacy in the Faro Municipal Market was also remarkable in this project. Among the themes most mentioned by the general population, the urban space and the community stand out, as well as nature, health and well-being, representing respectively 29%, 18%, 11% and 8.2% of the total of proposals submitted. Sofia Martins, responsible for the area of public participation in the candidacy, explains the importance of community involvement: "”Banca da Cultura” appears as a reinforcement of the characteristics of accessibility and proximity that are intended with this project. This initiative allows us to make the project known, to collect ideas for the artistic and cultural programme of the application, but above all to listen to the challenges, ideas and proposals from different groups in our community".
From 26th to 29th of October 2021, Faro2027 is taking part in the "Democracy Reloading" conference, a network that brings together 17 Erasmus+ national agencies from across Europe to work on youth participation issues at the local level, taking place in the Algarve, in the city of Portimão. This is a great opportunity to network and share practices on youth participation in local governance with around 18 municipalities from all over Europe. We also took Luísa Tinoco, from the education division of Faro Municipality, and our main goal is to support the municipality coaches in the active participation of young people. The involvement of young people in the development of youth policies and in decision making is fundamental to increase their sense of belonging and active citizenship in their communities. This invites municipalities and public authorities to address the needs and interests of young people, to involve them as actors of the solutions to their problems, to increase the level of ownership and responsibility in their own community and thus improve local participation and develop the quality of local democracy. In this way, we believe that young people, if properly informed, trained, empowered and engaged, will be the best agents of change and promoters of European values: Democracy, the Rule of Law and Equality. The key objectives of this network are based on:
Highlight of the event was the launch of the Democracy Reloading Toolkit, an online toolkit which aims to support municipalities and local authorities in successfully involving young people in decision-making. This kit is based on a set of 24 competence elements (attitudes, values, knowledge and skills) that will help a local (municipal) or regional government to design, implement and evaluate a successful youth participation framework. The toolkit will also help municipal officials related to youth policies to become empowered, competent and ready to encourage young people to get involved in decision making, thus improving active citizenship and democracy in local communities.
16 years of the Faro Convention27/10/2021 Teatro Lethes this Wednesday, on October 27th, hosted the Faro Convention International Conference - Warm Up Meeting, which aims to celebrate the 16 years of the Faro Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society. In this session, memorandums of understanding were signed between the Municipality of Faro, the University of the Algarve, UNESCO - Chair on Heritage and Heritage and the Reshaping of Urban Conservation for Sustainability and the TU Delft Chairo n Heritage and Values (Netherlands), which aim to strengthen the collaboration and further development of this topic in the future and the development of an action programme for the first Faro Convention International Conference which will be held in 2022. In the morning, the event had presentations by several PhD students on themes such as communities, sustainability, participation and urbanism. In the afternoon, a workshop and a debate on the use of digital technologies in the context of Cultural Heritage, with the MI.MOMO.FARO project as a motto, were held. It is recalled that the Faro Convention, signed in the city on 27 October 2005, underlines the importance of cultural heritage as an integral part of Human Rights and democracy, promoting a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of this concept and its relationship with society. The Faro Convention marks a turning point in heritage thinking, by understanding cultural heritage as a matter that belongs to all and for all, which should be everyone's responsibility and where everyone has the right to participate, being this inherent to the right to cultural participation defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. With the creation of an International Conference dedicated to the Faro Convention, the Municipality of Faro and the Candidature of Faro to European Capital of Culture 2027 intend to promote this valorization of the individual and collective role of society within the scope of heritage, which without it loses its true meaning.
The project MI.MOMO.FARO, promoted by the Faro’s candidacy to the European Capital of Culture, was distinguished with an Honourable Mention for Approaching the Young Public, in the first edition of the Património.pt Awards, of the Iberian Biennial of Cultural Heritage 2021. Sophie Matias, Councillor for Faro City Council, said: "We are delighted to receive this distinction that recognises the capacity of mobilisation of the Municipality of Faro and the Candidature for European Capital of Culture, but mainly, to reward the effort and commitment of the teachers and students of our municipality. They were the ones who gave life to the project. This honourable mention will also leverage a second edition of MI.MOMO.FARO that will involve more schools in the region, more teachers and more students.” Tiago Candeias, who represented MI.MOMO.FARO at the Iberian Biennial of Cultural Heritage 2021, said: "We make a very positive balance of our participation. This event is a benchmark in the Cultural Heritage sector, not only at national level, but also at Iberian and International level. We had a great participation from the public. Everyone showed great curiosity, interest and desire to know the project in order to understand how two apparently very different realities (Modernist Architecture and Minecraft) can come together and be taught in such a fun and challenging way. The interest was widespread, with many architects and teachers from schools in the region wanting to know more about the project and discover the buildings built by the students in Minecraft. The feedback we received exceeded all expectations."

Business associations from Algarve support the candidacy of Faro to European Capital of Culture 202722/10/2021
During the last week, many people have passed by our space in the Santa Iria Fair and demonstrated themselves being "Marafados para Ganhar" for this candidacy. Our biggest thanks to all the artists who volunteered to make our space at the fair more dynamic, namely: João Correia who reproduced the image of the "Marafados para Ganhar" campaign on an urban art mural; the artists Joana R. Sá, Leandro Marcos, Maria Vaz and Fábio Soares (aka Basap), who were customising t-shirts to offer to the visitors; as well as the Real Tuna Infantina and the Tuna Feminina Feminis Ferventis who brought music and good mood to our space. We have entered a new phase and the presence of Faro's Candidature to the European Capital of Culture 2027 in the Santa Iria Fair was one more step towards our affirmation as an artistic project and an important engine for the economic and social development of the Algarve. We want, as before, to continue to involve the whole region in the process, we count on everyone so that, together, we can face the challenges ahead. We are "MARAFADOS PARA GANHAR".

What beautiful, sustainable projects for everyone exist in the Algarve? What New European Bauhaus ideas and initiatives exist in other European countries and can be implemented in the Algarve? How can Algarve entities cooperate and co-create with the aim of actively participating in this big European movement?
These were the questions that guided the "Session of Co-Design of future projects under the New European Bauhaus movement", which took place on 21 July at the Museu do Traje, in S. Brás de Alportel, with the aim of contributing to the gathering of ideas for future projects and new unions that are fundamental to the development of the Algarve in this international challenge. The sharing session allowed us to explore new links and synergies between professionals and projects developed and desired for the Algarve region, crossing the areas of sustainability, accessibility, technology, art and culture. The session was specially designed to achieve the proposed objectives and included several moments of participation, brainstorming and co-design of new projects. Revitalisation of the urban space and the rooftops, new models of artistic residences, social-based entrepreneurship, renewal and (re)adaptation of traditional knowledge, food education and sustainable consumption habits were some of the topics discussed. Entities present at the Co-Design Session of future projects within the New European Bauhaus movement"
Currently projects and initiatives are being collected for the construction of the "digital gallery of inspiring projects in the Algarve, within the New European Bauhaus" through the following link: "New European Bauhaus" inspiring projects in the Algarve (google.com). Have you realized or have an ongoing project that fits the vision of the New European Bauhaus? Then this challenge is for you! What happens when you put Modernist Architecture and Minecraft together?

This board session for the Algarve Cultural and Creative Sector uses the group methodology commonly known as World Café. This is a methodology of sharing and group discussion widely used throughout the world, being very useful to stimulate creativity, explore relevant themes and create space for collective intelligence to emerge. The name Café appears precisely to invite people to talk in an informal, relaxed way, as if they were at a table in a café/restaurant. Although this World Café is Virtual, taking place on the Zoom platform, it will use methodologies that allow this action to be developed with dynamism and generating opportunities for everyone to participate, just as they would in a face-to-face setting. The aim is that the participants' contributions can be integrated in the document "Cultura Algarve Horizonte 2030", which should be concluded by the end of the summer and will serve to guide the municipalities and regional entities, framing public policies, with a view to the cultural development of the region. In a partnership between AMAL, Faro2027, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the University of the Algarve, a series of online actions have been carried out, focusing on the importance of culture in the development of the territories. Another consultation session open to the public is scheduled for the 19th of this month. The value of art and creativity in the design of pathways for transition around the global climate urgencies and the digital transition process, is the motto for the third and last Talk, which takes place on May 5, in the scope of the Cultura Algarve Horizonte 2030 process. What are the networks and agendas for climate and digital transition in the region and in Europe? What articulation is needed between public entities, private and civil society in digital innovation and environmental sustainability? What is the role of arts and creativity for the climate and digital transition in a society at different speeds? What framework does culture have in the new European funding mechanisms that are very focused on the climate transition and the digital transition? These and other questions will be on the table in the third debate that the Algarve is promoting this week, as part of a series of initiatives to discuss issues related to culture. It is important to remember that in a partnership between AMAL, Faro2027 - Candidature to European Capital of Culture, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the University of Algarve, a series of debates on the importance of culture in the development of the territories has been carried out. The third and last Talk, dedicated to the topic "Culture in the Climate and Digital Transition", will take place next Wednesday, May 5, at 10:30 am, via streaming, and can be followed through Facebook of Faro2027 (Facebook@Faro2027). MEP Cláudia Monteiro from Aguiar, Sara Machado, responsible for the Creative Europe Culture Programme in Portugal, Tiago Prata from Transversal Projects and specialist in cultural financing, and José Apolinário, President of CCDR Algarve are the guests for this debate, moderated by Dália Paulo, Municipal Director of Administration, Planning and Administrative Modernization of Loulé Municipality.
In addition to these Talks, 3 WorldCafés (online sessions with registration) are also planned, two taking place on May 12th and aimed at specific audiences (one for municipal managers and technicians in the cultural sector and another aimed at cultural agents). The last one, to take place on the 19th of May, will be open to the general public, and you can register HERE. The aim is that the participants' contributions can be integrated in the document "Culture Algarve Horizon 2030", which should be completed by the end of the summer and will serve to guide the municipalities and regional entities, framing public policies, with a view to obtaining EU funding in the next Multi-annual Financial Framework (2021 - 2027). What leads a family to buy or live in a building with modernist architecture? What impact do the characteristics of modernist buildings, such as minimalism, functionality, or the integration of interior and exterior spaces, have on the daily lives of families living in them? What experiences do families associate with their modernist buildings?
Living in a Modernist House is the theme of the second round table, promoted by the Candidature of Faro to become the European Capital of Culture, under the MI.MO.MO.FARO project. Accessible to the public through the Facebook page @Faro2027, "Living in a Modernist House" will take place on April 29th, at 18:30pm, moderated by Graça Lobo, from the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and Coordinator of the Regional Programme HArPA - Stories, Art in the Heritage of the Algarve. This online session will also include the presence of several owners of modernist buildings in Faro who, with their testimonials, will highlight the characteristics of this architectural movement and how they impacted on their experiences in their respective buildings. The project MI.MOMO.FARO aims to promote public discussion on major themes of Faro's Candidature to become the European Capital of Culture 2027: the city in the digital era, the enhancement of cultural heritage as a legacy for future generations and institutional cooperation in urban regeneration. The second of six online events is already scheduled for 28th April, among Talks and WorldCafés, in which a lively debate is sought on different visions for the future of culture, with a view to enhancing the sector and the Algarve region itself.
In a partnership between AMAL, Faro2027, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the University of Algarve, a series of debates on the importance of culture in the development of the territories is being promoted. The second Talk, dedicated to the theme "3 Steps for Cultural Governance", will take place next Wednesday, April 28th, at 10:30am, via streaming, and can be followed through Facebook of Faro2027 (Facebook@Faro2027). How can cultural strategies revert value in terms of social, economic and environmental impacts? What is the importance of cooperation and concertation for the success of long-term impact strategies? How can evaluation and monitoring strategies contribute to transparency and trust and constant innovation? Which governance models are currently and in the future best suited for regional collaborations in the field of culture? How should governance structures support the progress, creativity and independence of cultural programming? These and other questions will be on the table in this second debate that the Algarve is promoting in the coming weeks, which will focus on a circular path between Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation for the creation of long-term impacts in the cultural area. Moderated by Alexandra Gonçalves, Director of the School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism (ESGHT) of the University of Algarve, the guest speakers for this initiative are Cristina Farinha, Expert at the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission, Ruth Melville, Programme Manager at Impacts 08 Liverpool and Gijs de Vries, Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). The aim is that the participants' contributions can be integrated in the document "Cultura Algarve Horizonte 2030", which should be finished by the end of the summer and will serve to guide municipalities and regional entities, framing public policies, with a view to obtaining EU funding in the next Multi-annual Financial Framework (2021 - 2027). "The house of 289 welcomes us once again, in its contained space, being able to serve as a refuge, an escape, a rest. It will strengthen possibilities of happening. To return to the time when art houses are alive. Because it is the bodies that segregate the space. It is the bodies that define the sense of the spaces, that transform them into place. (...) What the house of 289 proposes (and all the artists who will temporarily inhabit it), is perhaps leaps into the unknown, exercises in experimenting with freedom, a 'stretching' of relational 'qualities'." Susana de Medeiros The entrance is free and the exhibition can be visited with a maximum limit of 10 people simultaneously inside the space and the mandatory use of masks. Disinfectant gel will be available at the entrance of the 289. Visitors should respect the safety distance of 2 meters between those who are not part of their group. "Discover the New Bauhaus" is the challenge promoted by a set of regional partners, namely Associação Designers do Sul, Al Mouatamid Ibn Abbad Association, Europe Direct Algarve, CCDR Algarve, Sul Informação and Faro2027.
Believing in the potential of Algarvians and the Algarve, it is the goal of this group of partners to inform, inspire and clarify about this large European movement in the hope that the Algarve and its actors can actively participate in the construction of the New European Bauhaus. Organized by the European Commission, this 1st European New Bauhaus conference offers two days full of information and inspiring examples. On the first day you will be able to attend several lectures and round tables with themes such as "The New European Bauhaus ship: a journey into the future", which will feature Elisa Ferreira, European Commissioner in charge of Cohesion and Reforms. On the second day, you can attend the panel debate "Transformative Ideas for the New European Bauhaus" with the participation of Nuno Jardim Nunes, President of the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI) and National Director of the Carnegie Mellon International Partnership, who will present Sea Bauhaus.
