Fábrica da Cerveja

Faro2027 will accelarate a new center for arts and creativity open to all!

One of the city's most iconic buildings it's "Fábrica da Cerveja".
Throughout the process of preparing Faro's candidacy for European Capital of Culture, “Fabrica da Cerveja” was one of the most mentioned buildings. Problems, ideas and dreams about this building were mentioned throughoutIt  wide participation processes carried out.

The identity of the building will remain intact as “Fabrica da Cerveja”. In the future this identity will be enhanced by the concepts of Factory, Faro, Future and Formosa (the name of the lagoon).

In the bidbook that Faro presented the “Fabrica da Cerveja”  is assumed as an emblematic building that will host the project's head office. Also in close connection with the  “KM Cultural” project.
"Fábrica da Cerveja" project also means the opening of the city to the Ria Formosa (lagoon). A building that will  help all of us
 to perceive the territory in a logic of greater respect for biodiversity.

So: what will "Fábrica da Cerveja" be in the future?

It's identity remains intact - “Fabrica da Cerveja” - but is enhanced by the concepts of Factory, Faro, Future and Formosa (the name of the lagoon). Its action will be based on a network of local, regional, national and international partnerships.
It will be space of creation, exhibition and meeting for cultural agents. It will also be space of public use.

Vocation of the project to promote the advanced training of skills of the cultural and creative sector, focusing on local agents, as well as the development of audiences and mediation. 
It integrates spaces and training programs of the SCC and spaces to support the service of cultural mediation.

ENJOY
Identification of spaces and protocols for the active participation of agents and groups related to the values of the project for the development of activities of a public or private nature. The granting of spaces will be temporary, limited to the organization of specific programs and activities. The design of spaces can be accompanied by technical and logistical support from the teams of the Fábrica da Cerveja ( see line of action "Enable").
It integrates spaces and programs for the reception of local, emerging or consolidated creative practices, translators of effervescence and possibilities of crossing between SCC agents.

Understood as the set of resources – spaces, equipment, programs – and initiatives focused on innovation, experimentation and prototyping to address the key questions and challenges for the Fábrica da Cerveja and the county.
It integrates spaces and programs to support creation in various disciplines from heritage to new media.

Set of spaces and dynamics aimed at making the project a meeting point of diverse audiences, where socialization and conviviality are promoted and the dialogue between the like and distinct for collective learning is facilitated. 
It integrates spaces and programs of incitement to socialization between audiences and creatives in the context, and on the pretext, of creative production.

ENABLE
Provision of human and technical resources to provide support services, both to the programs of the Fábrica da Cerveja, or external programs aligned in the pursuit of the same objectives. These resources are concentrated in specific spaces of the building of technical/reserved access and public access.
It integrates spaces and programs to support the operation of the Fábrica da Cerveja and its relationship with the public domain.

INSPIRE
Vocation of some exhibition spaces and cultural programs to promote contemporary discourses and artistic practices, both national and international, and bring them closer to the diversity of audiences of the Fábrica da Cerveja, positively contaminating cultural and public agents.
It integrates exhibition and debate spaces and programs of contemporary production, from visual to performing arts.

AMPLIFY
Configuration of physical and digital channels, replicating the idea of a resonance box, to centralize and enhance the communication possibilities of own and external programs associated with the Fábrica da Cerveja and the cultural strategy.
It integrates spaces and programs specially dedicated to expand the media projection of the production leveraged by the Fábrica da Cerveja and position fully within the digital structures.

Who were responsible for the project?
​It was a participated process where many people, cultural agents and regional agents were heard. 
To structure a strategic program that can be solid and allow to advance to the phases of the project, the municipality established a partnership with Gonçalo Louro & Cláudia Santos - Arquitectos, Lda. in cooperation with Opium, Lda. and Pablo Berástegui that allowed the construction of a Technical and Functional Program for the “Fabrica da Cerveja”.  
​Will the building undergo many architectural changes?
The architectural ideia seeks to maintain the image of the building, creating structuring spaces to support the operation of the building and flexible spaces that are multi disciplinary and adaptable.
​Will new buildings and spaces be created?
It will create a new building, at the rear of the Factory, where rooms will be created to support the musical production (with the ability to transform themselves). 
 Will create a new building in Afonso III Square to support the relationship between the Municipal Museum of Faro and the “Fabrica da Cerveja”
It will requalify the space surrounding the Municipal Museum, creating new buildings, expanded the area of it, creating new exhibition areas. 
 It will requalify the surrounding public space by tearing down the walls that currently create an inner courtyard;
​Will the project be developed in a phased manner?
Yes. The intervention will have 4 phases, and the first two are expected to be completed in 2026/2027. If Faro revices the European Capital of Culture, the third phase will be lit for 2027. The fourth phase is dependent on the evolution of the first three.
Desirablely the 1st and 2nd phase occur simultaneously. 
What is the estimated total investment?
The estimated cost of  total investment of the investment is 13.4 Million Euros divided into 4 phases:

1st phase - intrevenation in the part of the building under direct management of the municipality and intrevenation in the outside area

  • Investment: 2.1 Million Euros
  • ​Expected by 2026/2027
​
2nd phase - construction of new building in the rear of the building + construction of new building in Afonso III Square + garden
  • Investment: 2.6 Million Euros​​
  • Expected by 2026/2027

 3nd phase -
intevenation in the part of the building currently under ARCM management 

  • Investment: 3.5 Million Euros
  • Expected by 2027 - if Faro gets the title of European Capital of Culture

4th phase - Expansion of the Museum

  • Investment: 5.1 Million Euros
  • Expected by: to be defined taking into account the evolution of the previous phases

​What will be the management model used?
"Fábrica da Cerveja" will have an autonomous management model, enhanced the hybrid management with cultural and creative agents.
