16 years of the Faro Convention27/10/2021 Teatro Lethes this Wednesday, on October 27th, hosted the Faro Convention International Conference - Warm Up Meeting, which aims to celebrate the 16 years of the Faro Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society. In this session, memorandums of understanding were signed between the Municipality of Faro, the University of the Algarve, UNESCO - Chair on Heritage and Heritage and the Reshaping of Urban Conservation for Sustainability and the TU Delft Chairo n Heritage and Values (Netherlands), which aim to strengthen the collaboration and further development of this topic in the future and the development of an action programme for the first Faro Convention International Conference which will be held in 2022. In the morning, the event had presentations by several PhD students on themes such as communities, sustainability, participation and urbanism. In the afternoon, a workshop and a debate on the use of digital technologies in the context of Cultural Heritage, with the MI.MOMO.FARO project as a motto, were held. It is recalled that the Faro Convention, signed in the city on 27 October 2005, underlines the importance of cultural heritage as an integral part of Human Rights and democracy, promoting a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of this concept and its relationship with society. The Faro Convention marks a turning point in heritage thinking, by understanding cultural heritage as a matter that belongs to all and for all, which should be everyone's responsibility and where everyone has the right to participate, being this inherent to the right to cultural participation defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. With the creation of an International Conference dedicated to the Faro Convention, the Municipality of Faro and the Candidature of Faro to European Capital of Culture 2027 intend to promote this valorization of the individual and collective role of society within the scope of heritage, which without it loses its true meaning.
