Cápsula (Capsule) is the name of a project being implemented by Faro2027, Faro’s application to be European Capital of Culture, and its aim is to provide youngsters from the Algarve region with new prospects for the future, thereby meeting their needs and aspirations. At present, the project includes five young secondary school students who are carrying out artistic projects in the areas of music, photography, dance, visual arts and make-up.

One of the project’s objectives is to familiarise people with the work done by these youngsters both within Portugal and abroad:

João Melo aka Glantosz is participating in the international project promoted by the city of Piran (Slovenia)

“The Big Picture” is a project being implemented by Piran’s application to be European Capital of Culture 2025, which brings together digital works by artists from all over the world and whose aim is to reflect on the topic of climate change and its impact of the home area of each artist.
Sixteen-year-old João Melo was the artist invited to represent Faro2027 in this project. He presented a series of five black and white photographs that reflect the artist’s vision about climate change: “When people ask me what climate change is doing to our lives, I think about what it did at different times, I think about the different levels of pollution we created in the past, that we are creating at present and will create in the future. I took a series of five photos in which I wanted to show that we are all affected by our own pollution, but we continue to lead our normal lives and ignore the fact that we are destroying our only planet and our only life.”

This series can be discovered HERE and it shows the great difference between generations as far as pollution is concerned. João Melo took a father-son family photo, as well as individual portraits of both, with the aim of comparing the level of pollution that is integral to each of them and is present in the details of each image. This work earned a mention from the jury of “The Big Picture” project, which assessed the photographs as very poetic, strange looking portraits, atmospheric and with a humorous twist. In the words of the jurors: “Very lucid work for such a young artist.”

Reym Mansour presents her make-up work and talks about her dreams on the television programme Sociedade Civil

This February, the programme Sociedade Civil on the channel RTP2, presented by Luís de Castro, devoted an episode to young talents, based on the premise that “A talent is a seed that we must water for it to grow and blossom”. The programme showed examples of talented youngsters who continue to pursue their dreams and who have not lost heart because of this moment in history that we are living through and is influencing our lives in some way. Seventeen-year-old Reym Mansour was the young “Cápsula” who represented the talented newcomers of the Algarve, and she spoke about the journey she dreams of for herself and revealed some of the secrets of her make-up work. The presenter of the programme praised Reym’s work, and, bearing in mind that it could play a role in more “Hollywoodesque” film productions, asked her about her wish to specialise in Hollywood. The young artist admitted that she was still completely self-taught in her area of specialisation.
